UAE: Temperatures Hit Over 50°C for the First Time in 2023

UAE temperatures peaked over 50°C on Saturday, marking the first time this year that the searing threshold was crossed. The National Centre of Meteorology (NCM) recorded a temperature of 50.1°C in Bada Dafas, located in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi, at 2:30 PM.

The scorching conditions persisted on Sunday, with the NCM reporting the same high temperature at the same location. The heat, combined with high humidity, has made for a sweltering start to July in the UAE.

In light of these extreme conditions, doctors have advised people to avoid direct sunlight, stay well-hydrated, and be vigilant for signs of dehydration in children. To safeguard workers, the UAE government has implemented a mandatory midday break policy from July 15 to September 15.

This policy prohibits outdoor work between 12:30 PM and 3 PM when temperatures are at their highest. Similar heatwaves have affected various parts of the world. In the United States, over 111 million people were under extreme heat warnings.

Southern European countries such as Italy, Spain, and Greece have also experienced scorching temperatures, nearing the high 40s. The NCM’s five-day bulletin, issued on Sunday, predicted increased humidity on Monday and Tuesday along some coastal areas.

However, temperatures were expected to be slightly lower. Abu Dhabi was projected to reach approximately 42°C on Monday, while Dubai could approach 40°C. The forecast for Monday also included the possibility of strong winds, with speeds of up to 40 kph, stirring up dust and sand clouds.

Similar conditions were anticipated on Tuesday. The NCM stated that the weather would be generally fair to partly cloudy, with low clouds expected to appear over the east coast in the morning. In addition, the weather bureau cautioned that Tuesday night could bring more humidity and strong winds, once again raising the potential for dust clouds.
