Interview with Sabeeka Al-Shamlan, Programme Analyst for the UNDP
What does your role as a Program Analyst for the UNDP entail?
In my capacity as a Programme Analyst at the UNDP I work closely with different ministries and governmental entities providing technical support to achieve national priorities and address challenges. I support and manage projects that enables the national entities in the Kingdom of Bahrain and monitor their progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). My work is specifically in areas related to energy, environment, sustainable growth and gender.
Please tell us about your experience in social work, coaching and training. How has this developed your passion for Social Entrepreneurship?
During my work in different NGO’s in Bahrain and Jordan, I found my passion for social development. My experience later as a coach and trainer in BDB, interacting with entrepreneurs on a daily basis made me realize the crucial role that entrepreneurship plays in providing pioneering solutions to our most pressing social issues. Today, we look at social entrepreneurs as a main driver towards achieving the SDGs.

Your volunteer experiences focus on youth and women empowerment. Can you tell us how you would like to contribute more in this sector?
As I worked closely with youth and women in Bahrain and Amman, I understand that the development of youth and women will drive the community to progress and grow. I am working on developing a social initiative that would contribute to women empowerment and youth development, providing spaces for young girls to express themselves and expand on their potential.
Why did you join Manama Global Shapers?
To be surrounded by young passionate shapers, who are dedicated to the social and economic development of Bahrain. Being surrounded by such enthusiastic youth assures me that no matter what challenges we are facing, having the right talent and capacity will enable us to overcome them. I also find the Hub a perfect place to execute initiatives that raises awareness on sustainable development and social entrepreneurship.
Do you still have any free time? If so, how do you spend it?
I am in love with words! I always make sure to dedicate time for reading and writing. I also love traveling and enjoy the amusing feeling of walking in new cities, and I love playing football and calisthenics.
