Preparations for the first phase of the Bahrain Metro have officially started. This phase focuses on building two main lines that will form the core of the system. Phase One aims to modernise the Kingdom’s public infrastructure. It seeks to reduce traffic congestion and provide a sustainable alternative to private vehicle travel.
Phase One Technical Specifications
Phase One covers a total distance of 29 kilometres and includes 20 stations. The network is designed to carry around 43,000 passengers per hour.
- Line 1 (Red Line): Spans about 13 kms, connecting Bahrain International Airport to the Seef District.
- Line 2 (Blue Line): Extends roughly 15.6 kms, linking Juffair to the Isa Town Educational Area.
- Interchanges: Two key interchange stations are planned for easy transfers between the lines. One will be in the Bahrain Financial Harbour area and the other at the Central Market in Manama.
Project Integration and Future Development
The Bahrain Metro and the GCC Railway are currently managed as separate projects in terms of planning and delivery. However, the designs ensure future connections between the two networks to support national and regional transportation goals.
Work on Phase One is underway under an approved master plan in coordination with relevant government bodies. While the main routes and station counts are finalised, the total project cost may change. The final budget will be determined after completing detailed engineering designs and assessing current market conditions.
Project Goals
- Sustainability: Reduce the national reliance on private cars.
- Efficiency: Shorten daily commute times for residents and citizens.
- Infrastructure: Integrate with the existing bus network to create a complete mass-transit system.
