Kuwait’s top court has confirmed the death sentence earlier passed against a man convicted of murdering his mother-in-law and attempting to kill his estranged wife.
The final ruling was delivered by the Court of Cassation against the Kuwaiti citizen charged with killing his wife’s mother with a Kalashnikov rifle after his spouse left him and refused to continue life with him.
The Appeals Court had earlier referred him to a psychiatric hospital where he was found responsible for his actions.
Investigations confirmed that the defendant in his 40s had planned to kill his wife’s family.
Prosecutors charged him with premeditated murder of the victim aged 68 years by preparing a Kalashnikov, heading to her estate, and ambushing her.
When she left with her daughter, he attempted to stop them. Both initially escaped. However, he was able to target them with a hail of bullets that struck his wife’s mother, resulting in her death in Al Wafra area south of Kuwait.
When police arrived at the scene, they found the dead woman covered in blood inside the vehicle, the front and rear windows of which had been shattered by bullets.
The murderer’s wife said in investigations that they were at odds and that he had always threatened to kill her. In July 2023, the Criminal Court handed down the death sentence to the defendant.
