Oman approves bonus for government staff

Oman’s Ministry of Finance has approved the annual periodic bonus for the year 2021 for government employees.

The ex-gratia payment will be 100 percent for those whose monthly salary is less than Omani Rials 900, and 50 percent for those whose salary is Omani Rials 900 or higher. The bonus or the ex-gratia payment is normally calculated on the current basic pay. This decision is applicable to employees of ministries, civil, military and security units, and public authorities.

The announcement was welcomed by those employed in the government sectors.

This year saw many reforms in the government, including formation of new ministries, merging and renaming of existing ones and removal of some. Several new governmental units and authorities were also established as part of the new structure. The Ministry of Labour, erstwhile Ministry of Manpower, has been proactively conducting several field visits to check on the Omanisation drive in private organisations across various industries. Many workshops and training sessions were also set in motion to encourage Omani youth to take up roles as entrepreneurs.

In the wake of these measures, there has been an almost 20 per cent decline in the expatriate workforce in government sector and 15 per cent in the private sector compared to last year, as per a recent bulletin shared by National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) Oman.
