Saudi: Main mall, bank shut in Mecca over COVID-19

Local authorities in the Saudi holy city of Mecca have said they shut down a major shopping centre after cases of the new coronavirus were detected among its employees.

The famous mall, located in Mecca’s district of Al Azazia, has been closed to undergo disinfection and sterilisation, according to Saudi online newspaper Sabq.

The mall is expected to reopen at least after one week, the report said, citing unidentified sources.

Also in Mecca, a well-known bank has been closed after one of its employees tested positive for the new coronavirus, Sabq said. Another employee contracted the virus after having come in touch with the first and transmitted it to his family, prompting the shutdown of the bank in the district of Al Shara starting from Sunday, it added.

The bank is being disinfected and sterilised. The two infected employees are now placed under domestic isolation while results of tests done on their colleagues have yet to be known.

Last month, Saudi Arabia allowed all businesses to resume their activities amid strict measures against COVID-19 under a plan for a gradual return to normal life in the kingdom.
