Oman Urges People Not To Catch and Consume Fish Affected by Green Tide Phenomenon

The Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources (MAFWR), urged sea-goers not to catch and consume fish affected by the green tide phenomenon, as well as not to swim in these places.

This came after the ministry noticed recently a bloom of phytoplankton in what is known as the green tide in parts of the Wilayats of Duqm and Masirah, with the death of some fish.

According to environmental experts, green tide is huge accumulations of large green algae that occur in many parts of the world, but are more common in temperate and tropical latitudes.

The most affected areas are the eastern and western coasts of North America, Asia, and the Pacific Ocean. This incident occurs in a specific area, and is often seasonal or episodic, and is temporary and ephemeral.

According to what is known scientifically, The type of phytoplankton that causes the phenomenon of the green tide flourishes in Omani waters in specific months, which are December, January and February.
