The canopy outside Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal-1 collapses on several cars following heavy rains over past 24 hours.

A portion of the roof collapsed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport Terminal 1 in the early hours of Friday morning after the Indian capital experienced heavy rains, killing one person, injuring eight, and causing delays to flight operations.

The incident occurred at 5 AM local time (0630 UAE time). Several cars were damaged. All flight departures from the terminal were temporarily suspended.

A Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) spokesperson said: “Due to heavy rain since early this morning, a portion of the canopy at the old Departure forecourt of Delhi Airport’s Terminal 1 collapsed around 5 AM. There are injuries reported, and emergency personnel are working to provide all necessary assistance and medical aid to those affected.”

In a later tweet, Delhi Airport said all departing and arriving flights from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 were fully operational. “Flights at Terminal 1 Arrivals are also operating. However, the departing flights from Terminal 1 are cancelled till 2 PM today,” it said.

After weeks of heat wave, the Indian capital experienced incessant rains, with more than 228.1 mm recorded in the Indian metrological department’s Safdarjang base station over the past 24 hours.

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department said that a moderate to intense spell of rain is likely to continue in Delhi until mid-day. Several areas were left waterlogged.
