A proposal has been submitted to add areas close to schools, places of worship and public facilities to the shisha-banned areas, reliable sources in the Muharraq Municipal Council stated.

This proposal came at a time when the Minister of Works, Municipal Affairs and Urban Planning, Eng. Esam Khalaf, stated that the practice of tobacco delivery activity is based on Law No. 8 of 2009 on combating smoking and all kinds of tobacco. The minister added that the decision issued by the Ministry of Health No. 2 of 2011 is to issue the requirements that must be met in restaurants and cafes and other stores that offer tobacco and its derivatives for smoking purposes.

In response to the proposal, Khalaf pointed out that the law and the subsequent decision assigned to the Ministry of Health to determine the requirements for carrying out this activity, led to the abolition of Ministerial Resolution No. 8 of 2006 issued by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Agriculture at that time, and therefore the Council’s proposal to re-implement that decision cannot be met.
