Saudi Arabia said its air defence systems intercepted and destroyed nine drones that entered the Kingdom’s airspace, as the government reaffirmed its resolve to safeguard national security amid rising regional tensions.
According to the Saudi Ministry of Defence, the drones were detected and neutralised shortly after entering Saudi airspace. Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, spokesperson for the ministry, said the unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted immediately upon detection by the country’s air defence systems.
The development comes at a time of heightened regional instability, with several Gulf states reporting aerial threats and disruptions to airspace and aviation operations.
During its weekly session, the Saudi Cabinet reiterated that the Kingdom would take all necessary measures to defend its territory and protect its citizens and residents. Officials said the government remained committed to maintaining national security and responding firmly to any threat.
The Cabinet also expressed appreciation for statements issued by leaders of several allied and friendly countries condemning what it described as attacks targeting Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states.
The interception of the drones is part of a broader series of aerial incidents reported in the region in recent days, reflecting the escalating security environment across parts of the Middle East.
Authorities did not report any damage or casualties from the incident, and officials said air defence forces remained on high alert as the situation continues to evolve.
Observers note that Saudi Arabia has increasingly relied on layered air defence systems to counter drone and missile threats, particularly amid the ongoing regional conflict that has seen several retaliatory strikes targeting Gulf states.
Officials emphasised that the Kingdom’s security institutions remain fully prepared to address emerging threats and ensure the safety and stability of the country.
