In late May Donald Trump took his first international trip as president, which included a days-long tour of Saudi Arabia, Israel, and the West Bank. At the time the world was gripped by a brief, meme-inducing moment involving Trump, Middle Eastern leaders, and a glowing orb, but now, months later, the focus has shifted to the long list of gifts Trump received from Saudi Arabia. After a Freedom of Information Act request, the Daily Beast obtained and published a list from the White House showing the 83 gifts Trump accepted from the Kingdom.
For every seemingly simple gift, like pairs of leather sandals and a book about traditional Saudi Arabian costume, there are the elaborate and ornate ones, including a purple wool robe with white tiger fur lining and a dagger made of pure silver with mother of pearl sheath and “various designs.” The Saudis appear to know the way into Trump’s heart and appealed to his own self-obsession and affinity for gold, gifting him personalized items such as “artwork featuring a picture of President Trump” and an orange and gold wool robe lined with cheetah fur as well as a gold honor medal. Wow!
