Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed its sovereign mandate to protect its borders following a significant escalation in regional hostilities. Maj. Gen. Turki Al-Maliki, official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence, confirmed the successful interception of three cruise missiles targeting the Al-Kharj region, situated southeast of Riyadh. This operation underscores the heightened readiness of the Kingdom’s multi-layered air defence network.
The surge in activity included a direct drone strike against the US Embassy compound in the capital. While officials reported only minor material damage and a contained fire, the incident has drawn sharp international scrutiny. Furthermore, a Tuesday morning offensive involving eight drones aimed at Riyadh and Al-Kharj was successfully neutralised by Saudi Royal Air Defence Forces.
Ras Tanura Targeted
In a separate engagement on Wednesday, the Ministry of Defence reported the interception of a drone launched toward the Ras Tanura refinery. The massive facility, a cornerstone of global energy infrastructure on the Gulf coast, remained operational.
“Initial estimates indicate that the attack was carried out by a drone and did not result in any damage,” the ministry said in a statement posted on X
Saudi Arabia Cabinet Issues Firm Warning
The escalation prompted an emergency Cabinet session on Tuesday night, chaired by HRH Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman. During the briefing, the Cabinet condemned what it termed blatant Iranian aggression and voiced unwavering solidarity with neighbouring Gulf states.
Official statements carried by the Saudi Press Agency emphasised that the Kingdom reserves the full right to respond to these provocations. The leadership highlighted that these persistent strikes target not only Saudi sovereignty but the stability of the global energy market and regional security frameworks.
