Bahrain: Indian Operator Likely to Bid for $2BN Metro Contract
India’s first and biggest metro rail company Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has announced that it has qualified for the pre-qualification tender process for an international consultancy project, to construct Phase One Project of Bahrain Metro, which comprises two lines running 30 km long and covering 20 stations.
In line with this, the Delhi Metro has signed an MoU with Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML), an Indian public sector undertaking which manufactures a variety of heavy equipment, mainly those used for earth moving, railways, transport and mining. As part of the partnership deal, BEML will be responsible for manufacturing and supplying of rolling stock while the Delhi Metro will provide expertise in project development, budgeting and facilitating the development of contractual obligations for the Bahrain Metro.
It represents the first phase of the Bahrain government’s ambitious plans of developing a 109 km rail-based urban transit network (metro) consisting of an elevated corridor with two lines with an estimated length of 28.6 km with 20 stations and two interchanges.
The Delhi Metro said it is actively exploring opportunities to bag international projects for construction and operations of metros across the world. Earlier, it had qualified in the pre-bid process for the construction of the Tel Aviv Metro Project in Israel. In addition, the DMRC is also in the process of bidding for other international metro projects such as Alexandria in Egypt, Ho Chi Minh in Vietnam and Mauritius as well. The DMRC is currently engaged in the construction of the Dhaka Metro in Bangladesh as a consultant.
