All schools in the Makkah region of Saudi have been closed since yesterday due to a sandstorm that has severely limited visibility, disrupted traffic, as well as inconvenienced a lot of people. In addition to the poor air quality, temperatures reached a stifling 39C.
Jeddah, Riyadh, Makkah, Madinah and the Qassim and Eastern provinces were the hardest hit with wind speeds reaching 55 kilometers per hour. The sandstorm is expected to continue until Thursday, the 13th of April, and then gradually weaken.
The Saudi Press Agency reported “visibility of less than one kilometer”. Bugshan hospital also reported an increase of patients having breathing difficulties. However Saudi Arabian Airlines said that “no flights will be delayed as the situation is under control”.
