Sharjah will develop a new exhibition and conventions centre at a total cost of AED 500m ($136.2m), following the purchase of a strategically located plot of land near the Emirates–Al Dhaid–Khorfakkan roads for AED 146m ($39.8m).
The project forms part of the emirate’s efforts to expand its cultural and events infrastructure and improve accessibility for major international exhibitions.
The announcement was made by Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, who confirmed that designs are nearing completion and construction will begin immediately.
The project is scheduled for delivery within two years, with work underway to complete construction within 22 months. The official opening is targeted for November 2027, in time to host the 46th edition of the Sharjah International Book Fair.
From that edition onwards, the book fair will relocate from its current venue to the new exhibitions and conventions centre.
Sharjah approves new exhibition centre plans
Speaking to Direct Line on Sharjah Radio and Television, Sheikh Dr Sultan explained that the project was initially planned for a site adjacent to Sharjah Mosque. However, extensive and deep excavation requirements at that location prompted a reassessment.
Alternative plots along the same corridor were reviewed to ensure the venue remained on a key transport route. One option was rejected as it backed onto the Al Badi neighbourhood, in order to preserve residential tranquillity.
The selected site near the Emirates–Al Dhaid–Khorfakkan roads was chosen for its strategic advantages, including the provision of a rear exit to improve traffic flow and accessibility during major events.
The new centre is designed to host a wide range of events beyond the Sharjah International Book Fair. Expo Centre Sharjah will continue to host commercial exhibitions and maintain its full calendar of activities.
Several events, including the Xposure International Photography Festival, have already been moved to the new venue, with further exhibitions planned as part of a phased transition.
Sheikh Dr Sultan also addressed traffic arrangements during the Sharjah International Book Fair, which is currently held at Expo Centre Sharjah in the Al Taawun neighbourhood. Measures are being implemented to ensure smooth traffic flow, aligned with directives to enhance road connectivity and reduce congestion.
Plans were also outlined for a future train station near the Al Khulafa Al Rashideen crossroads on Al Wahda Street, a move expected to further strengthen mobility and accessibility within the district.
