Elon Musk Announces Open-Sourcing xAI’s Chatbot Grok

Just days after filing a lawsuit against OpenAI developers ChatGPT, Elon Musk has announced that his artificial intelligence startup xAI would open-source its ‘Grok’.

Musk, a co-Founder and an early investor in OpenAI, had sued the company for abandoning its original mission in favour of a for-profit model.

In response, OpenAI publicised emails that showed the Tesla CEO supported a plan to create a for-profit entity and wanted a merger with the EV maker to make the combined company a “cash cow”.

Grok, launched last year, is already available to X subscribers. The move to open source gives the public free access to experiment with the code behind the technology.

Later, in reply to a comment, Musk added: “OpenAi is a lie”.

Musk, himself one of the richest man in the planet through his technology companies, has warned against the use of artificial intelligence technology by companies like Microsoft and Google for profit.

By making Grok open source, xAI joins companies like Meta and Mistral, that have published the codes of their chatbots to the public. Google released Gemma, an AI model that can be tailored to their needs by outside developers.
