Bahrain: Woman jailed for attacking husband, denied kids’ custody

A woman serving a year in jail for attacking her husband with a knife received a court order to forfeit the custody of children in a petition filed by the husband.

The duo has three children from their 10-year wedlock. The husband said he moved the Sharia court to represent the children solely in official procedures that may require the presence of both parents.

The Sharia court ruled that the father is qualified to secure the children’s custody, given that he satisfies the conditions to be a guardian. For custody, he should be a Muslim, mentally and physically sound, adult, honest, able to raise, protect and provide for the needs of children and not have a contagious disease.

The court asked the woman to forfeit her right of custody, for she is now serving a prison term. The case didn’t contest her eligibility to keep children under her custody.
