The High Criminal Court has convicted twin brothers, aged 25, for their involvement in a case of assaulting and insulting a police officer at the Salmaniya Medical Complex.
The verdict includes imprisonment for the first accused and a fine for the second accused. The court sentenced the first accused to six months in prison for his role in the assault. However, the second accused received a monetary penalty of BD50.
The twin brothers had previously appeared before the court, with one brother in custody and the other released pending trial. During the proceedings, the first accused denied the charges, claiming that he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. Similarly, the second accused also pleaded not guilty.
According to the Public Prosecution, the incident occurred on January 13, 2024, when the first accused assaulted a police officer who was performing his official duties at the Salmaniya Medical Complex.
The assault did not result in the officer’s prolonged illness or incapacity to carry out his personal responsibilities for more than 20 days. Furthermore, the first accused openly insulted and verbally abused two public employees, causing harm to their dignity and status as public servants while they were fulfilling their professional obligations.
The second accused was charged with publicly insulting the employees. The victim, a police officer, provided testimony that shed light on the incident. According to his account, they had received a report of a misunderstanding between a police officer and the first accused, who was seeking emergency treatment at the Salmaniya Medical Complex.
Upon their arrival at the hospital, the second accused, the brother of the first accused, was present and attempted to calm his sibling down. It was during this encounter that the assault and verbal abuse took place, with the first accused kicking the victim in the chest.
