UAE sees first prototype of bridge which can build and design itself

In partnership with American software company Autodesk, Lebanese engineering company Dar Al-Handasah has designed a smart bridge, which builds and designs itself using 3D printing, robotics and artificial intelligence (AI).

The first prototype of the five-metre bridge was designed in the UAE, and is part of the engineering company’s efforts to introduce a safer, sustainable and smarter design to the country due to its digital capabilities and innovations.

Dar used the generative design feature in Autodesk’s Fusion 360 to bring the bridge to life. “At its core, the bridge is a two-metre interactive pedestrian bridge made from fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) and conceived and realised through state-of-the-art technologies and processes including generative design, additive manufacturing, and robotic technologies,” the company said in a statement.

A real-scale 5-metre 3D smart pedestrian bridge was unveiled at Autodesk University (AU) 2022, which took place on September 27 to 29 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
