UAE Eid AL Fitr 2024 Likely To Begin On April 10

Most Muslim-majority countries will celebrate Eid Al Fitr on April 10 according to crescent sighting predictions made by astronomers at the International Astronomical Center.

Some nations including Indonesia, Malaysia and Morocco began the Holy month of Ramadan on March 12.

These locations are expected to sight the Shawwal crescent moon on April 9.

“Seeing the crescent is possible with the naked eye from Central Asia and parts of Africa on April 9,” Muhammad Shawkat Odeh, Director of the International Astronomy Center said adding that a telescope will allow sighting from most other areas.

Countries that started Ramadan on March 11, such as Gulf states, will be unable to spot the young moon on April 8.

This is because “the moon sets before the sun and the conjunction occurs after sunset,” Odeh explained.

Crescent observations from over 1,500 volunteers across the world will be collated on the Astronomy Center’s website. This data helps determine official moon sightings.

While most nations are predicted to celebrate Eid on April 10, India and Bangladesh may delay one day if their observers cannot confirm sightings on April 9.

The moon’s age and visibility times were provided for major cities to aid the calculation, Odeh said adding that provided weather remains clear, April 10 is expected to mark the end of Ramadan and the start of Eid Al Fitr for the worldwide Muslim community.
