Bahrain: Man Sentenced to 5 Years in Prison for Drug Smuggling

The First Supreme Criminal Court of Appeal has confirmed a 5-year imprisonment sentence bestowed upon a drug smuggler.

The suspect, an Asian national, was seized while venturing to smuggle drugs into the Kingdom by concealing it in a mobile phone box. The man stood trial in August last year on the charges of smuggling hashish and narcotics with the purpose of selling it, in addition to drugs abuse. He was arrested at Bahrain International Airport.

As per officers’ testimonies, they found an iPhone box from the man packed with a substance smelling like hashish. Court statements say, two pieces of hashish and narcotic pills were found hidden within the box. The suspect explained to the Public Prosecution officials that the drugs were for personal use and not for selling. Laboratory tests of the man’s urine and blood proved that the man had indeed abused drugs.

Investigators, however, found that the substance was packed in a method in preparation to be sold. He appealed not guilty, but the court rejected his plea.
