Meta’s Threads Rolls Out New Delete Account Feature, Instagram Will Not Be Affected

The new account deletion feature will be accessible through the settings menu in a section titled ‘Delete or Deactivate Profile’

Instagram’s Threads app is undergoing changes that will allow users to delete their Threads account while retaining their linked Instagram account.

This update comes in response to user frustration over the inability to delete Threads independently. Adam Mosseri, the CEO of Instagram, announced the change in a post on Threads.

The new account deletion feature will be accessible through the settings menu in a section titled ‘Delete or Deactivate Profile,’ according to Mosseri’s post on Threads.

Initially positioned as a potential rival to Twitter, Threads faced challenges in maintaining its early rapid growth.

In October, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, Threads’ parent company, revealed that the app had attracted approximately 100 million monthly users three months after its July launch, a significant decline from its initial success.

When Threads was first introduced, it was regarded as a direct competitor to Elon Musk’s X, formerly known as Twitter.

However, the app launched without several key features found on other platforms, such as search and direct messages.

One major criticism leveled at Threads was the inability to fully delete an account without also deleting the associated Instagram account.

Users could only deactivate their Threads account if they wished to keep their Instagram profile active. This lack of account deletion functionality drew regulatory attention.

In addition to the account deletion option, Threads users will soon be able to opt out of automatic sharing of posts to Instagram and Facebook.

This feature, while intended to raise awareness of Threads among the billions of users on these platforms, received negative feedback from many users.

Responding to user concerns, Mosseri acknowledged the need for greater control over the sharing experience.
