Saudi Arabia’s AlUla Begins Excavation For Brand New Sharaan Resort

Saudi Arabia’s Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) has begun excavation works for the Sharaan Resort.

Located within the Sharaan Nature Reserve, the resort will provide 38 suites carved into the local sandstone mountains when complete.

It is aimed at immersing guests in the natural beauty and history of AlUla through facilities including wellness areas, family offerings and varied dining.

Construction involves modernising ancient Nabataean rock-carving methods. Parts of the resort will be excavated in stacked layers within the rock formations.

RCU views it as a model for “visionary planning and innovative techniques.” The resort’s blend of “luxury and sustainability will define AlUla’s hospitality landscape,” as the commission develops its aims of 5,000 rooms by 2030 and 8,500 by 2035.

“The Sharaan Resort is our most ambitious project yet. This initial excavation is tangible evidence of our continued efforts to develop AlUla into a premier destination that harmonises luxury tourism with the preservation of unique cultural and natural heritage. Our work is fully guided by RCU’s environmental, social and health impact processes, and we are ensuring that all stakeholders appreciate the special location we are working in,” Chief Development and Construction Officer Ben Hudson said.

The excavation signals cooperation between RCU, architect Jean Nouvel and contractor Bouygues Construction.

It supports Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and AlUla’s sustainability goals by pioneering new construction and operation techniques.
