UAE: 143 tonnes of naswar seized from illegal factory

A total of 143 tonnes of naswar (banned tobacco product) and its raw materials were seized from an unauthorised factory inside a farm in Saih Al Muhab during an inspection campaign, a top official said.

The farm was being misused for the manufacture, trade and storage of naswar, which is banned in the UAE.

Naswar is a type of chewing tobacco that is widely popular in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Central Asia and Iran. It is a mixture of green tobacco and lime powder.

The seized naswar were burnt and the workers of the factory were referred to the concerned authorities.

Naswar is considered a health risk — more than smoking — due to the harmful substances added in the preparation that could cause cancer.
