UAE President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the release of 3,005 prisoners ahead of Ramadan, official news agency WAM reported on Thursday.

The move is aimed at providing the prisoners and their families an opportunity to start a new life along with the settlement of their financial obligations, the report added.

The UAE’s leaders traditionally pardon many inmates ahead of Ramadan. Rulers of other emirates also issued pardons on Thursday.

Sharjah’s ruler Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi announced the release of 377 prisoners, Ras Al Khaimah ruler Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi ordered the release of 306 inmates in punitive and corrective institutions, and Umm Al Quwain ruler Sheikh Saud bin Rashid Al Mu’alla also ordered the release of a number of prisoners, WAM reported.
