A “desert lynx” cat, also known as a caracal, has been spotted prowling through the streets of Fujairah, prompting environment authorities to warn the public to stay away from the animal.

In a social media post the Fujairah Environment Agency said it was investigating sightings of the medium-sized cat in the UAE.

A video showing the cat, known locally as an Al Washq, pacing through the street was shared online.

The Environment Agency added it was investigating whether or not the cat was a wild animal or owned by residents.

It added that legal action could be taken in the event that the animal is owned by a resident in the emirate.

A post on Instagram said: “A specialist team from the Fujairah Environment Agency is currently checking the presence of the animal in the area where it was photographed and investigating whether it is owned by a resident or considered a stray animal.

“In the event that it is proven to be owned by a resident, the necessary legal actions will be taken by the Environment Authority and the relevant authorities.

“The Fujairah Environmental Authority urges wild pioneers and residents not to be exposed to animals, and they are also advised to keep away from it at a safe distance for your safety”.

It added that “Al-Washq is a medium-sized cat that features its catching skills that can jump up to 10 feet in the air to catch its prey.

“This type of cat plays an important role in ecosystems that express environmental health indicators and unique biodiversity in the environment of the Emirate of Fujairah”.
