This is attributed to UAE Central Bank implementation of advanced security features
The UAE Central Bank’s 500 Dirham banknote has been awarded the title of best new banknote issue for 2025 in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. The recognition was announced at the High Security Printing EMEA conference, held earlier this month in Basel, Switzerland.
This newly recognised banknote, part of the UAE’s third polymer series, was hailed for its cutting-edge security features and a design that reflects the UAE’s dedication to sustainability. The Central Bank’s innovative approach includes incorporating advanced technologies seen in the award-winning Dh1,000 banknote issued in 2023.
The 500 dirham note features stunning three-dimensional designs and incorporates the region’s largest surface-applied foil stripe, making it a trailblazer in the Middle East. Printed by Oumolat Security Printing, a fully owned subsidiary of the Central Bank of the UAE, the banknote entered circulation on November 30, 2023.
On the front, the note displays the Terra Sustainability Pavilion in Expo City Dubai and the reverse side features Dubai’s Museum of the Future, with the Emirates Towers and Burj Khalifa in the background, further reflecting the nation’s architectural achievements and green initiatives. Notably, the Burj Khalifa is powered mainly by solar energy, further aligning with the sustainability theme.
In line with its commitment to inclusivity, the 500 Dirham note also features Braille symbols, helping visually impaired users identify the banknote.
The move towards polymer material for these banknotes not only enhances their durability but also significantly reduces environmental impact. Polymer is fully recyclable, contributing to the UAE’s broader vision for a green economy.
Saif Humaid Al Dhaheri, Assistant Governor of Banking Operations and Support Services at the Central Bank of the UAE, and Chairman of Oumolat Security Printing, said, “We are proud to lead the region in introducing banknotes with advanced security features and materials that minimize environmental impact. Additionally, our dedication to inclusivity ensures that our banknotes are accessible to all, with Braille symbols aiding visually impaired users.”
