Bahrain Could Soon Have a Three-Day Weekend System

Five Bahraini MPs have made an urgent motion to extend the weekend in the kingdom to three days: Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

This proposal comes in light of the global developments witnessed in various fields and the advancement of technological capabilities that contribute to societal progress on all levels.

“There is an urgent need to keep pace with global advancements, including global economic systems,” said MP Mohammed Al Aliwi, one of the proposers.

“However, Bahrain, as an Islamic country with its customs and traditions regarding Friday, which is considered a sacred day, makes it difficult to accept working on this day, even for a limited number of hours, due to its more emotional impact than economic effect,” he added.

He further emphasized that taking advantage of Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays as holidays will contribute to improving the work-life balance.

“Employees will be able to spend more time with their families and engage in personal activities and interests, enhancing their overall satisfaction and raising their well-being.”

“The new system will also be in line with the social and cultural dimensions of Bahrain, known for its great concern for children and the elderly. Therefore, the decision supports family cohesion and social solidarity and enhances the quality of employees’ lives.”

The other MPs who support the proposal are Hamad Al Doy, Ahmed Qaratah, Mohammed Al Balushi, and Badr Al Tamimi.
