UAE: Hefty penalties for electronic blackmail, extortion

Imprisonment for a period of up to 10 years and fine of up to Dhs500,000, or either of these two, will be faced for electronic blackmail or extortion in the UAE.

The UAE Public Prosecution clarified that imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years and fine of no less than Dhs250,000 and not more than Dhs500,000, or either of these two, will be faced for blackmail or threatening another person by means of a computer network or any information technology means.

If the threat is to commit a felony or to impute matters offending honour or dignity, the penalty shall be imprisonment for a period not exceeding 10 years.
