Bahrain: Man jailed for 15 years for cultivating marijuana at home

A Bahraini man, who landed in jail for 15 years for growing marijuana in his home, had his appeal rejected by the High Appeals Court. Rejecting the appeal, the court also confirmed a BD10,000 fine slapped. Interestingly, the man told the court that he was not guilty and had no knowledge of the marijuana, he was found guilty of growing.

He stood by his claims that the seeds he planted were fruits and vegetables. Police said they caught hold of the suspect after investigating a tip-off on men peddling drugs on the streets of Bahrain. Investigators told the court that the suspect had large quantities of drugs in his possession when they caught him.

“When we searched the suspect’s home after obtaining a search warrant, we also found several devices and tools used by the suspect for growing marijuana seeds.” Court files say, despite producing conclusive evidence, the suspect denied wrongdoing at the court and claimed that the room was for growing fruits and vegetables. The Public Prosecution had charged the suspect with planting and possessing marijuana.
