Bahrain: Expat Jailed For Blackmailing Employer With Indecent Video Release Threat

The court of cassation has issued a final verdict, sentencing a Asian man to five years in prison and permanent deportation from the country.

The individual in question was found guilty of blackmailing and threatening his employee with release of an indecent video on social media platforms unless he was paid a sum of money.

The prosecution presented evidence that defended had concerned the victim into paying a monetary amount by threatening to expose compromising material that would harm the victims reputation.

The defendant’s action included intentionally causing distress to the victim by misusing wired and wireless communication devices. According to the details of the case, the defendant was employed by company owned by victim.

The victim has requested defendant to delete a private video recorded by office’s surveillance cameras, which contained indecent content.

However the defendant retained a copy of the video. After the defended left the employment of the company, he contacted the victim and demanded a cash payment in exchange for not releasing the recorded video.

Fearing the potential consequences of the video being made public, the victim send the defendant a sum of BD 9000. Despite receiving the payment, the defendant continued to blackmail the victim, who eventually had no choice but to report the matter to the authorities.
