Bahrain: Expat gets five-year jail term for drug smuggling

The High Criminal Court sentenced an Asian man to five years in prison after attempting to smuggle 100 capsules stuffed with methamphetamine into the Kingdom of Bahrain.

The defendant is said to have swallowed the capsules in an effort to deceive officials at Bahrain International Airport and enter the Kingdom without being caught.

Upon his arrival, however, the defendant triggered the suspicions of the customs officials at the airport as he appeared confused.

The defendant was initially requested to shift to the red lane to be manually searched after denying carrying any illegal items.

Thereafter, the defendant was transferred to the x-ray room to scan his body, and it was discovered that he was carrying 100 capsules in his gut.

As a result, he was sent to Salmaniya Medical Complex to extract the capsules and have them examined.

It turned out that they had methamphetamine.

Investigations carried out by the anti-drug department indicated that the accused was working within a network that brings narcotic substances to the Kingdom with the intention of trafficking, and the role of the accused was to transport narcotic substances in his gut by ingestion them.
