Gulf Insider visits one of the oldest cities in Saudi Arabia, AlUla

Located Northwest of Saudi Arabia, AlUla is a beautiful Arabian oasis with a history that can be traced back to ancient times. Now, under the custodianship of the Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU), this untouched gem is being revealed to the world. Gulf Insider was recently invited by the Commission to explore the destination’s extraordinary natural heritage and witness a first-of-its-kind event.

There are few places in the world where you can feel like a true explorer charting the unknown and fascinating to see a historic destination 1,100 km away from Riyadh. AlUla remains largely off the global tourism radar, however, there are a lot of different cultural events and experiences that visitors can immerse themselves in.

Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo

The Royal Commission for AlUla (RCU) recently partnered with the Saudi Polo Federation (SPF), to bring the second edition of Richard Mille AlUla Desert Polo. The tournament is one of the first events in the region that solidifies the Commission’s efforts to promote the Arabian equestrian legacy in Saudi Arabia.

The landmark event, which took place as a part of the Winter at Tantora festival, has witnessed leading international polo players competing in an adrenaline-packed game set against a stunning backdrop of the breathtaking AlUla canyons. Apart from the attendance of the world’s best polo players, the event also brought together patrons and professionals from around the world.

Desert X AlUla

Desert X AlUla is a recurring, site-responsive, international art exhibition taking place in AlUla. This year’s exhibition, under the curatorial vision of Reem Fadda, Raneem Farsi and Neville Wakefield, features newly commissioned works by 15 artists bringing a plurality of voices from around the world. “Under the theme of Sarab, the exhibition explores ideas of mirage and oasis, both intrinsic to desert history and culture, that have taken on complex worldwide significance over time. Invited to consider these ancient concepts, participating artists have responded with new works that address dreams, camouflage, fiction, dis/appearance, extraction, illusion and myth, while also examining the dichotomy between the natural and man-made worlds.”

Maraya

Maraya is one of the world’s architectural marvels. The structure is covered in 9,740 mirrored panels reflecting AlUla’s stunning landscapes, making it the largest mirrored building in the world, according to Guinness World Records.

OKTO

OKTO is set atop the beautiful outlook area of Harrat Uwayrid, serving authentic Greek cuisine at the edge of the Earth. It’s one of the most mind-blowing restaurants we have ever visited and it’s definitely a must-try when visiting AlUla.
