Forget cramped waiting areas and stale sandwiches—a new study reveals the world’s airports are upping their game, offering luxurious escapes for the discerning traveller.

Medical travel insurance experts, AllClear, analysed 1,800 airports worldwide, scoring them on their “luxury score” as part of the study.

Luxurious airports: Criteria for selection

This score considers factors like the number of lounges, designer shopping options, availability of excellent F&B, and even the presence of high-end hotels on-site.

The results reveal a world beyond the typical airport experience, with some terminals featuring:

  1. Indoor gardens for a breath of fresh air amidst the hustle and bustle.
  2. Sparkling swimming pools to take a refreshing dip before a long flight.
  3. Michelin-star restaurants to tantalise taste buds with gourmet cuisine.
  4. Even golf courses for a quick swing before takeoff.

Leading the list

Wondering which airport reigns supreme in the realm of luxury? Dubai International Airport was named the leading airport.

This state-of-the-art airport raked in an impressive 83 points out of 100 on the ‘Luxury Score’, thanks in part to its over 30 exclusive lounges offering an exclusive escape for weary travellers.

Following Dubai closely is London Heathrow Airport, scoring 82 points. Hamad International Airport, Doha, came in third with 73 points.

Asian airports dominate the ‘top 15’ group

Interestingly, Asian airports dominate the top 15 names in the list. However, Europe also made a strong showing with five entries, including the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport in fifth place.

North America was represented by a single entry: New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport. This bustling hub, known for its designer stores and celebrity sightings, secured the 11th spot.
