Saudi Arabia targets net zero emissions by 2060

Saudi Arabia on Saturday announced aims to reach zero-net emissions by 2060 and more than double its annual target to reduce carbon emissions.

The newly-announced goal could be achieved sooner and would not have any adverse financial or economic impact on the world’s top oil exporter, Saudi’s Energy Minister said.

The first wave of initiatives will deliver against the targets under the SGI programs that aim to achieve more than 278 Mtpa carbon emissions reduction by 2030.

Most technology needed to cut emissions would mature by 2040, the minister added.
