Hyundai is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its IONIQ brand, and two of its latest offerings are the sleek and aerodynamic IONIQ 6 sedan and the boxier, retro-inspired IONIQ 5 compact SUV. Both boast stylish designs, long-range, and advanced features. Gulf Insider last month had the opportunity to test drive both in Oman. First Impressions Both cars comfortably seat five adults. The long-range versions we drove offer impressive range: 545 km for the IONIQ 6 and 360 km for the IONIQ 5 Standard Range and 430 km for the IONIQ 5 Long Range (the driving range may vary between 430 km and 460 km based on the road conditions, driving style, temperature and the type of tyres used). Efficiency scores are also admirable: 6.6 km per kWh for the IONIQ 6 and 5.3 km per kWh for the IONIQ 5. This translates to approximate driving costs of 0.002 BHD per km for the IONIQ 6 and 0.003 BHD per km for the IONIQ 5 for Bahraini nationals (electricity cost of 0.016 BHD per kWh). For expats, who are billed higher for electricity, the cost is estimated at 0.005 BHD per km for the IONIQ 6 and 0.004 BHD per km for the IONIQ 5 (based on an average expat electricity cost of 0.029 BHD per kWh). We’ve based the calculation on the EWA’s electricity consumption tariffs. An average Bahraini household pays up to 16 fils/kWh while an average non-Bahraini household pays 29 fils/kWh. The Hyundai IONIQ 6 Performance Sharing the same platform, the IONIQ 6 delivers a maximum power of 239 kw in its all-wheel drive, dual motor version, reaching a maximum speed of 185 kmph and covering a distance of 545 km. It delivers a torque of 605 nm and is equipped with a 77.4 kWh battery. The IONIQ 5 offers a choice of two battery sizes. The standard-range IONIQ 5 is available with a 58 kWh Lithium-Ion battery, covering a range of 360 km, and accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 6.1 seconds. The long-range comes with a 72.6 kWh Lithium-Ion battery, travelling a distance of 460 km, and accelerates from 0-100 kmph in 5.2 seconds. The Hyundai IONIQ 5 Both cars handle well with a smooth ride, although the IONIQ 6's lower centre of gravity adds a more planted feel in corners. Interior and Features Spacious and well-appointed interiors define both cars, though the IONIQ 6's minimalist design with high-quality materials feels particularly impressive. The IONIQ 5's interior, while more traditional, is still stylish and comfortable. Both cars are generous with standard features: large touchscreen infotainment systems, digital instrument panels, and a wide range of driver-assistance features. The IONIQ 6 adds some extras like a heads-up display and panoramic sunroof. Both the IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 5 offer a compelling blend of style, performance, and features, making them both enjoyable and practical. However, in my opinion, the IONIQ 6's sleeker design, longer range, and high-tech interior tip the scales in its favour. Incentives The IONIQ 5's premium model is priced at BHD 24,000 and the IONIQ 6 starts approximately at BHD 14,500 (value derived from USD 38,615). We’ve learned with the help of AI that both cars in Bahrain are eligible for government incentives. Bahraini nationals can avail of subsidy on the purchase price up to BHD 5400 for the IONIQ 6 and up to BHD 4000 for the IONIQ 5 along with a waiver of registration fees. The total estimated purchase price, taking those incentives into account, would be around 15,500 BHD for the IONIQ 6 and 13,400 BHD for the IONIQ 5. The IONIQ 6 and IONIQ 5 are compelling additions to the growing EV market in Bahrain. Their stylish design, impressive range, and advanced features make them excellent choices for both individual drivers and families.
