Bahrain: Daughter sues father for not paying for college

A father who refused to bear the expenses of his daughter’s education will now pay her BD50 monthly following a court order.

The father allegedly stopped paying for her college fees and other expenses after obtaining a divorce from her mother.

Finding herself and her brother’s education in turmoil, the daughter decided to approach the Court seeking justice. The girl alleged that her father has refused to pay her college fees and other expenses, thus burdening her mother to meet her financial needs.

She said her father has not provided her with any financial security and is not bothered about her higher education, maintenance, expenses and future.

The girl also told the Court that her father’s action left her and her brother in a difficult predicament, with her mother finding it hard to pay for her expenses due to increasing financial commitments.

During the hearing, the girl’s lawyer told the Court that the defendant stopped paying for his daughter’s education after securing a divorce from her mother.

“My client is studying at the university, and nobody is looking after her.” “His behaviour has damaged my client and put her studies at risk,” the lawyer told the Court. The Court viewed that the girl is entitled to receive pocket money since she is still a student at a university.

“The girl should receive a monthly allowance based on her father’s monthly income. The man should pay his daughter BD50 monthly, the Court ruled.
