Dubai Launches New AI Pedestrian Crossings
Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO) and Derq have marked a significant milestone in their partnership by launching 14 AI Smart Pedestrian Crossing systems in DSO, as part of their joint effort to create smart city solutions.
Derq’s “Real-Time Perception and Connectivity AI Platform” is a system that detects pedestrians, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users with precision, integrating seamlessly with road infrastructure to enhance safety measures.
Through patented behaviour prediction models, the technology proactively activates warning signs and traffic signal controllers to anticipate potential conflicts between pedestrians and vehicles, significantly enhancing safety, according to a statement by Emirates News Agency (WAM).
The AI algorithms of the new system effectively detect and track vehicles and road users approaching pedestrian crosswalks, optimising the reaction time of surrounding vehicles.
Customisable alerts can be activated or deactivated based on specific crossing scenarios, ensuring efficient traffic management and optimal safety.
Moreover, the system’s ultra-high-speed and low-latency 5G connection facilitates seamless connectivity, enabling extensive data collection and remote operation capabilities.
In the future, the 5G technology will also allow the system to communicate safety information and alerts to connected vehicles approaching pedestrian crossings, the WAM statement added.
