Germany Cannot Make Up Its Mind About Supplying Saudi With European Eurofighter Typhoon Fighters

The German government cannot agree on whether to allow the delivery of European Eurofighter Typhoon fighters to Saudi Arabia. Part of the coalition is opposed.

Saudi Arabia ordered 48 Eurofighter Typhoon fighters but never received them. Britain is insisting that Germany, which produces a third of the components for the planes, approve the exports.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Finance Minister Christian Lindner are in favour of resuming deliveries. The opposing position is held by the Greens and part of the German Social Democratic Party.

Germany imposed an embargo on all arms exports to Saudi Arabia after the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi in 2018. Angela Merkel’s government has banned shipments of weapons that have components made in Germany. This includes the Typhoon aircraft.
