Oman: Mountain Collapses Due to Heavy Rainfall

A mountain collapsed in Muscat due to heavy rainfall on Sunday, causing traffic jams and affecting two vehicles. The incident occurred on the Al-Amerat-Qurayyat road on Al-Atakiya Street. The Royal Oman Police (ROP) official has confirmed that the mountain collapsed due to the heavy rains, which have been affecting Oman since April 7, 2023.

In a statement, the Civil Defence and Ambulance Authority (CDAA) said no injuries were recorded. “Oman has been hampered by heavy rainfall in many parts following an air depression,” it stated. The authority has also urged drivers to exercise caution when driving on the roads affected by the heavy rainfall and to follow traffic regulations.

On Sunday evening, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) also issued a heavy rain alert advising the public to be cautious. “The public is advised to avoid low-lying areas and venturing into the sea due to heavy rains expected from morning to evening on Tuesday over the Hajar Mountains and the surrounding areas,” the CAA statement said.

The depression has caused thunderstorms, active winds, and hailstone falls in various parts of the country, with the worst hit being the governorates of Dhofar, Al Wusta, South and North Al Sharqiyah, and parts of the governorates of Muscat, Al Dhahirah, and Al Dakhiliyah.

The collapse of the mountain has also caused traffic accidents and a large traffic jam in the area. The authorities have dispatched teams to the affected areas to assess the damage caused by the heavy rains and provide assistance to those affected.
