Jackal Mother Saves Cub from Eagle’s Clutches in Thrilling Encounter
In a heart-stopping moment captured in stunning photographs, a jackal mother in Masai Mara, Kenya, valiantly rescued her cub from the clutches of a tawny eagle. The incredible images showcase the mother’s bravery as she lunged at the predator, causing it to drop her cub mid-air. The cub landed safely on the ground, much to the relief and joy of its mother, who swiftly grabbed it and made their escape from the eagle’s reach.
Renowned photographer Ateeb Hussain, 39, was fortunate enough to witness and capture this dramatic encounter. He initially noticed the jackal mother moving around frantically with her cub in her mouth. At first, he assumed she was on high alert for potential threats like hyenas in the area. However, just moments later, a tawny eagle swooped down and attempted to snatch the cub from the mother’s grasp.
The jackal mother displayed remarkable agility, managing to outmanoeuvre the eagle and evade its grasp momentarily. However, the predator was relentless and made a second attempt, successfully seizing the cub. In a matter of seconds, the mother’s swift reaction came into play as she lunged after the eagle, causing it to drop the cub mid-flight.
Photographer Ateeb Hussain described the intense moment, saying, “It was so quick and only lasted a couple of seconds. The eagle grabbed the cub, but the jackal lunged after it, and the cub was dropped mid-flight. It seemed rather okay for all its troubles. Perhaps the eagle had not managed a secure enough grip.”
Undeterred, the eagle made another attempt to capture the mother and her cub. However, their resilience paid off, and the predator was unsuccessful. Eventually, the eagle gave up and flew away. Mr Hussain and his team followed the jackal for about a kilometre until they witnessed a heartwarming reunion with its partner at a new location. The entire sighting lasted approximately an hour, leaving Mr Hussain in awe of this rare and dramatic interspecies interaction.
This remarkable incident serves as a testament to the courage and determination of animal mothers in protecting their young. The jackal mother’s swift actions and unwavering love for her cub ensured its survival in the face of a formidable predator.
