Four Asians Punished For Illegal Fishing In Bahrain
The Sixth Minor Criminal Court has sentenced four defendants of Asian nationality to a 10-day imprisonment and permanent deportation from the Kingdom of Bahrain for illegal fishing. This was announced by the Chief Prosecutor of Ministries and Public Entities.
The court also ordered the confiscation of their vessel, the “Banush,” along with the seized catch and prohibited nets used for fishing. These nets, known as drift nets or “Al-Hayali,” are legally prohibited for fishing operations due to their detrimental impact on marine life and resources.
The incident came to light following a report received by the Public Prosecution from the Bahrain Coast Guard indicating the arrest of the defendants aboard the ship “Banush” while engaged in fishing using drift nets. During the arrest, authorities seized 245 kilograms of fish from their possession. Upon interrogation by the Public Prosecution, the defendants confessed to the accusations levelled against them.
Emphasising the importance of upholding the regulations outlined in the Law Regulating Fishing, Exploitation, and Protection of Marine Wealth, as well as relevant ministerial decisions, the Chief Prosecutor underscored the paramountity of safeguarding marine resources and wildlife.
