Messi Fired Over Saudi Trip According to Reports

Lionel Messi will not have his Paris St Germain (PSG) contract renewed, following his “unauthorised trip” to Saudi Arabia, according to a report, which cited French sports daily L’Equipe. The PSG forward had previously signed an optional third-season clause in his 2021 contract, however, club officials have reportedly decided not to activate it.

Messi faced suspension for two weeks on Tuesday, the report said, as he was supposed to practice with his team, following a 3-1 defeat at home against Lorient in Ligue 1 on Sunday. The 35-year-old instead flew to Saudi Arabia with his family, and is further banned from playing or training with the team, the report said, adding that his pay will be reduced during his suspension.

Messi’s suspension will also lead to him missing the upcoming Ligue 1 matches against Troyes and Ajaccio. However, he may return for the match against Auxerre on May 21, and will then be available for the club until the season end on June 3.
