UAE: Two-year jail time, up to Dh500,000 fine for online blackmail

Indulging in an act of cyber extortion or blackmail can land you in jail for up to two years as well as a heavy fine of Dh500,000, the UAE’s Public Prosecution has warned.

In an awareness message on its social media accounts, the authority raised awareness on Article 16 of the Federal Decree-Law No. 5 of 2021, concerning the combatting of cybercrimes, which stipulates the penalty for the crime of cyber blackmail.

As per the law, the penalty can be more severe if the victim is threatened to commit a crime or behave in a way that is morally offensive.
