The Public Prosecution in Bahrain has initiated investigations into the unlawful sale of weight-loss medication as part of a significant crackdown on illegal pharmaceutical activities.
The case came to light after the National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) reported the existence of a social media account promoting and selling unauthorised weight-loss drugs.
Working in close collaboration with the General Directorate of Criminal Investigation and Forensic Science, law enforcement authorities successfully apprehended a delivery representative who was found to be carrying the illicit medication.
The representative, who holds Arab nationality, provided crucial information about the main suspect involved in importing the medication from outside the Kingdom of Bahrain.
Promptly responding to the report, the Public Prosecution wasted no time and launched an immediate investigation. Both suspects were subjected to rigorous questioning and confronted with substantial evidence, including the confiscated items.
As a result, the Public Prosecution has ordered the detention of the two individuals for seven days, pending further investigation.
The illegal sale of medications poses significant risks to public health and safety. Unregulated weight-loss drugs can have detrimental effects on individuals’ well-being, potentially leading to severe health complications.
The swift response by the authorities highlights their commitment to protecting the community from such illicit activities and safeguarding public health.
Public awareness
Authorities have reiterated the importance of raising awareness among the public about the risks associated with purchasing medications from unverified sources, particularly through online platforms and social media.
They encourage individuals to consult licenced healthcare professionals and obtain medications from authorised pharmacies to ensure their safety and efficacy.
The Public Prosecution’s swift action in response to the illegal sale of weight-loss medication underscores the government’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting public health.
Efforts to curb such unlawful activities will continue as authorities remain vigilant in their pursuit of justice and the preservation of community well-being.
