Noor Riyadh, the world's largest Light Art Festival, has returned to Riyadh with its third edition from November 30 to December 16, 2023. This year, the festival, themed 'The Bright Side of the Desert Moon,' promises a breathtaking experience with over 120 artworks showcased across five hubs in Riyadh. The uniqueness of Noor Riyadh lies in its innovative approach, inviting artists from around the world to collaborate with local talents. As an organiser explains, "We wanted to think outside the box on how we invite artists from around the world to showcase their work in Saudi, and collaborate with international artists and Saudi artists as well." The festival's diversity shines through not only in its international collaboration but also in the range of artistic expressions. From sculptures and installations to immersive light art and photography, Noor Riyadh breaks from convention, encouraging artists who think beyond traditional mediums. This year the festival features over 100 artists from around the globe. "Every year we try to open the map and see which country we did not focus on or which country we did not get artists from," shares the organiser, shedding light on the ratio of artists, with 35% Saudis and the remainder from various corners of the world, bringing a fresh perspective to each edition. Noor Riyadh began during the challenging period of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2021. Overcoming obstacles, the festival showcased exceptional art. The success of the festival not only resonated with the local audience but also attracted international attention, contributing to Saudi Arabia's emergence as a cultural destination. The festival has become a catalyst for international recognition of Saudi artists, showcasing the country's cultural transformation. "Even after our first year, a lot of artists from the Saudi artists got commissioned internationally, and that's great," the organiser noted, highlighting the international appeal and recognition that the festival has garnered. Noor Riyadh aims to make contemporary art accessible, reaching people who may not typically engage with art and culture. The festival's growth is evident in its strategic evolution, with a shift from 13 to 40 locations in response to public demand. Entering its third year, the focus has remained on the community, with the success being measured in not just international acclaim but in the joy it brings to the local community. Having conducted over 1000 surveys daily, the organisers actively seek to understand the preferences of the audience to ensure the festival caters to their comfort and truly ensures that they get familiar with contemporary art and actively engage with the festival.
