Kuwait’s Criminal Court has sentenced a soldier to seven years in prison and fined him KD316,000 for illegally obtaining Kuwaiti citizenship, in a case spanning more than three decades. According to Al Qabas Arabic daily, investigations found the defendant had paid KD35,000 dinars to be affiliated with an individual later proven to be a forger, before his citizenship was revoked by decree after biometric fingerprint checks confirmed discrepancies, according to inquiries by nationality authorities. Authorities said the defendant used the forged citizenship to secure government jobs, including serving as a corporal in the Ministry of Defence and working at the Ministry of Interior. He also obtained salaries, financial benefits, loans and pension entitlements totalling more than KD105,000. The court also sentenced his father, identified as the main facilitator in the forgery scheme, to seven years in absentia for his role in enabling the illegal acquisition of citizenship. The case is part of broader efforts by Kuwaiti authorities to combat citizenship fraud, strengthen verification systems using modern technology and safeguard national identity. Seven OPEC+ countries agreed to implement a production adjustment of 188,000 barrels per day in June 2026, as part of efforts to support global oil market stability. The countries — Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iraq, Kuwait, Kazakhstan, Algeria, and Oman — held a virtual meeting on Sunday to review market conditions and outlook. The adjustment is part of the additional voluntary production measures first announced in April 2023. The group said these adjustments could be partially or fully reversed depending on evolving market conditions. The countries reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining flexibility, noting they may increase, pause, or reverse the phase-out of voluntary cuts, including those introduced in November 2023. They also stressed the importance of full compliance with the Declaration of Cooperation, with implementation to be monitored by the Joint Ministerial Monitoring Committee (JMMC). The group confirmed plans to compensate for any overproduction since January 2024 and said the current measure would help accelerate those efforts. The seven countries will continue to meet monthly to assess market developments, compliance, and compensation progress, with the next meeting scheduled for June 7, 2026.

Kuwait’s State Security and Terrorism Crimes Circuit at the Criminal Court has sentenced four people to three years in prison for fuelling sectarian strife on social media platforms. The court acquitted eight defendants and refrained from punishing 50 others in cases linked to sectarian incitement on social media, placing them under good conduct pledges and financial guarantees ranging from KD1,000 to KD3,000, with mobile phones confiscated. Last week, the court jailed 17 people for three years with hard labour on charges including incitement, sympathising with a hostile state and spreading false information online, and ordered the deportation of two expatriates after serving their terms. In a separate ruling, a tweeter was sentenced to 10 years with hard labour for similar offences. The court stressed such actions breach national duty, calling for unity and support for state institutions.

Kuwait’s Court of Appeal has upheld death sentences handed to three Iranian nationals convicted of attempting to smuggle large quantities of drugs into the country, local media reported. The ruling confirmed an earlier verdict by the Criminal Court, which found the three men guilty of trying to traffic more than 120 kilograms of hashish and 10,000 psychotropic pills. Authorities said the suspects were intercepted by Coast Guard forces near Kubbar Island following coordination with the General Directorate for Drug Control, after intelligence indicated they were transporting the drugs by boat. Investigations revealed the men had planned to drop the shipment at a designated location near the island. During questioning, the defendants reportedly admitted they were to receive 10,000 Kuwaiti dinars each for the operation after coordinating with another individual. The smuggling attempt was foiled in a coordinated operation, leading to their arrest and the seizure of the narcotics. The appeal court’s decision reinforces Kuwait’s strict stance against drug trafficking offences. READ MORE: Kuwait Restores 100% Government Staffing, Normal Hours Resume

The carrier will initially operate two daily direct flights between Dubai International Airport and Kuwait International Airport, with the first service (EK855) departing at 7:50am and the second (EK857) at 2:55pm. From May 16, Emirates will increase the number of daily flights to four using A350 and B777 aircraft, boosting seat capacity on the route, before adding a fifth daily service from May 21. The Trump administration has told several Gulf states that they should use American companies to rebuild their infrastructure damaged by Iran’s retaliatory strikes amid the US-Israeli war on the Islamic Republic, US and Arab officials familiar with the discussions told Middle East Eye. Kuwait, Bahrain and the UAE are among the countries the US has tapped as potential customers for US engineering, manufacturing and construction firms, given the extent of damage in their countries, the officials told MEE. Saudi Arabia and Oman have been less impacted by Iranian air strikes. In their talking points, US officials have been emphasizing the economic partnership the Gulf countries share with the US and its importance to reconstruction. A US official told MEE that promoting US companies for Gulf reconstruction was part of the Trump administration’s “America First” foreign policy, which prioritizes economic statecraft. But an Arab official told MEE that the push appeared “a little tone-deaf”, as the Gulf is still wary of a return to fighting and on edge over the US’s commitments to regional security. The Trump administration’s push is not merely symbolic. Rystad Energy estimates the repair costs for energy-linked infrastructure in the Gulf alone could reach as high as $39bn, excluding the damage in Iran. A fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran is holding, […]
