Strict Flag Rules As Kuwait Celebrates National Day

Kuwait has announced strict rules for raising its flag as the country is marking its National Day and Liberation Day anniversaries. Violators are warned of stringent penalties. The Kuwait Municipality said it is not permissible to raise the flag if it is tattered or in an “inappropriate” form. Nor should the flag be used for commercial marketing or hoisted on private buildings except on special occasions and during the national celebrations. The municipality warned that violating the rules is punishable by imprisonment and an unspecified fine. Kuwait annually celebrates the National Day marking independence from Britain on February 25. The following day is designated as the Liberation Day commemorating the dislodging of Saddam Hussein’s forces from Kuwait in 1991 after a US-led military multinational campaign that ended the August 1990 invasion. To mark the occasion, the Kuwaiti government has declared that work is suspended in all state and public institutions in the country on February 25 and 26 as official holidays while February 27 will be a day of rest. Friday and Saturday are the usual weekend in Kuwait. Official work will thus resume on Sunday, March 2. The current shape of the Kuwaiti flag was adopted more than 63 […]

Kuwait To Launch Electronic Price Monitoring System To Tackle Artificial Hikes

Kuwait’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry is set to launch a fully electronic price monitoring system for this year, aiming to curb artificial price hikes and enhance transparency in commodity pricing across markets. The system, which will track the prices of basic and secondary commodities, will allow consumers and ministry inspectors to monitor price fluctuations in real time.   It will also provide a comprehensive database of commodity prices across different points of sale, enabling consumers to compare prices and identify discrepancies. To ensure price accuracy, cooperative societies will be responsible for entering and updating price data, which will then be audited and monitored by the Ministry. The system will consider global market fluctuations and supply-and-demand dynamics in verifying price changes. The Ministry has set March 6 as the final date for submitting bids for the system’s development, with an initial bid guarantee of approximately 2 per cent of the bid value, which must remain valid throughout the bidding process.

Kuwait: Biometric Fingerprinting Exposes False Returnees

Kuwait has discovered hundreds of forgery cases linked to expatriates whose fingerprints were matched to people who had previously been deported from the country for various reasons, a Kuwaiti newspaper has reported. A mandatory biometric fingerprinting system has exposed those expats, mainly domestic workers and drivers, after their fingerprints were matched with people who were deported years ago from Kuwait, Al Rai newspaper quoted security sources as saying. Some were deported more than 20 years ago. They illegally returned to Kuwait with forged passports and different names. The majority are Asian nationals, the sources added. “Many citizens were renewing their workers’ residency permits normally, and these workers used to come to Kuwait and travel on vacation normally, with no travel restrictions,” the sources said. Their return came after tampering with their data and physical features to the point that some of them underwent surgical operations on their fingers, the sources explained. Others resorted to burning and disfiguring their hand so that their previous fingerprints could not be recognised, while some others changed their passports and obtained a passport in another name, relying on the fact that taking their fingerprints according to the old system makes the forgery too difficult to […]

Kuwait Restricts Leave For Imams, Muezzins During Ramadan

Kuwait’s Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs has issued new regulations restricting leave for imams, muezzins, and preachers during Ramadan, with a complete ban on leave during the last 10 days due to the increased demand for them in mosques. In an administrative circular distributed by the Mosques Sector, the ministry outlined the new leave policy, stating that between the 1st and 19th of Ramadan, imams and muezzins are allowed a maximum of four days off, provided their replacements come from within the same mosque. The circular further emphasised that substitutes will not be permitted to take leave during this period to ensure continuity in religious services. The directive strictly prohibits leave during the last 10 days of Ramadan, citing the essential role of religious leaders in facilitating intensive prayers and worship activities during this sacred period. Additionally, the ministry suspended weekly rest days for imams and muezzins throughout Ramadan in order to maintain the sanctity and continuous worship during the month.

Earlier this month, Kuwait unveiled new rules for medical tests that will apply to all people including expatriates planning to get married in the country starting April. The update features several amendments, expanding the scope of the medical examination to include all marriage contracts documented in Kuwait, whether both parties are Kuwaitis, one of them is Kuwaiti, or both are non-Kuwaitis. In 2023, Kuwait saw its lowest […]
