The Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture on Wednesday launched an awareness campaign called “Harvest Season” to promote locally produced fruits and raise the efficiency of its marketing system to support Saudi farmers.The Saudi Press Agency reported that the launch was part of efforts aimed at raising awareness of the importance of eating local fruits; promoting a healthy lifestyle by buying local produce; and spreading knowledge of agricultural products.Saleh Bindakhil, the ministry’s official spokesperson, said: “The campaign aims to educate the public about the health and nutritional benefits of various local fruits that are available in different seasons during the year, and to achieve a set of goals that are in line with the ministry’s policies and strategies and the objectives of Vision 2030.”Bindakhil added that “Harvest Season” also aimed to support the production of local goods; enhance their quality and safety; increase awareness of agricultural produce and the health benefits of eating local fruits; help the marketing of local products; and support local farmers, while increasing their income in accordance with Saudi Vision 2030, which aims to improve the standard of living and raise the quality of life.He acknowledged the great support enjoyed by the agricultural sector from the […]

Over a hundred teachers will be dispatched to Saudi educational institutions abroad, the Saudi Press Agency reported on Wednesday.The Education Ministry issued the decision that would see 136 educators take up places in 19 countries in the upcoming academic year.Mohammad Al-Ghamdi, the deputy minister, said the annual program seeks to provide educational opportunities for the children of delegates, workers, and residents abroad.He also emphasized the Kingdom’s dedication to extending education opportunities to the children of Islamic and Arab communities residing in those countries.Al-Ghamdi highlighted the merits of the Saudi curriculum and hope the educators selected for the program serve as excellent representatives of the Kingdom in the countries they have been assigned to. Syria’s national airline resumed regular services to Saudi Arabia after a 12-year suspension as the first flight arrived in Riyadh on Wednesday. The move, announced by Syrian Airlines and confirmed to AFP by Syria’s ambassador to Saudi Arabia, continues a slow rapprochement between the two governments who restored diplomatic relations last year. Ambassador Ayman Soussan said a Syrian Airlines plane carrying 170 passengers touched down in the Saudi capital, marking the resumption of a regular route. He said the two countries have agreed to “operate one round-trip flight per week between Riyadh and Damascus” after the long pause prompted by Syria’s civil war. Syrian transport ministry official Suleiman Khalil said the direct route could be expanded to cover airports in the Saudi cities of Jeddah and Dammam, depending on demand. Passenger flights between the two countries were halted in 2012 when Riyadh severed ties with Damascus over President Bashar Al Assad’s brutal crackdown on anti-government protesters at the start of the country’s civil war. The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with several government agencies, has apprehended an individual accused of falsely claiming to treat infertility, neurological disorders, and other ailments, exploiting vulnerable patients. The accused operated an illegal clinic within an unlicensed building in Jeddah, disguised as a contracting office. The suspect has been referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation and legal proceedings, prioritizing the safety of citizens and residents. Regulatory authorities took action following reports of fraudulent activities, including false claims of medical treatment in an environment lacking minimal medical and health requirements, posing significant health risks and violating regulations. It was discovered that the individual had been previously deregistered for serious violations in the medical profession. Law enforcement agencies have detained the offender and referred them to the prosecution for violating Article 28 of the Health Professions Law, in addition to Article 32 of the Regulations on Assisted Reproduction, Embryos, and Infertility Treatment, which carry penalties of up to five years imprisonment and a fine of half a million Saudi Riyals. The Saudi Electricity Regulatory Authority clarified that the power outage affecting parts of the Hittin, An Nakheel, Al Aqiq, and Al Ghadeer neighborhoods in Riyadh on Tuesday’s night at 8:33 PM was caused by damage to a main power transmission line by a contractor working on a public project unrelated to the Saudi Electricity Company. The authority stated that service restoration to all affected areas was carried out gradually, with 83% of affected customers having their power restored within the first hour. The longest restoration time for any affected customer did not exceed one hour and 58 minutes. Emphasizing its commitment to consumer rights and the users of the public electricity network, the authority highlighted that it has initiated regulatory procedures in response to this incident.

Prominent Saudi writer and journalist Mohammed bin Abdulatif Al Sheikh, known for his staunch stances against militancy, passed away on Tuesday after struggle against illness, his family said. He was 69. Shifting from the business world to journalism, the late writer emerged as a well-read columnist and a relentless fighter against radicalism in his writings in Saudi media for around two decades. He used to pen a popular column titled “Something” in the Saudi newspaper Al Jazirah for many years. He also contributed to compiling the “King Abdul Aziz Encyclopedia in Foreign Documents” and the “Folk Culture Encyclopedia”. Al Sheikh published “If Bin Laden not to Return”, a book containing a collection of his articles. He also wrote on folk art and composed poetry. One of his poems was crooned by well-known Saudi singer Abdul Majuid Abdullah. Glowing tributes His death triggered an outpouring of tributes from several Saudi personalities. Google is awarding research grants to advance artificial intelligence (AI) at King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia. Each grant is worth $100,000 (Dh367,000), and aims to support distinguished KAUST researchers engaged in projects focused on multilingual and multimodal machine learning, as well as the development of large language models. These initiatives will be undertaken within KAUST’s newly established Centre of Excellence on Generative AI. Each faculty awardee will also be matched with a Google researcher who will act as their sponsor, according to a statement from KAUST detailing the AI projects funded by Google. Saudi Arabia is actively investing in AI development. World Wide Technology, a US IT company, has partnered with Aramco Digital, the IT arm of the state oil company Aramco, to enhance its market, projected to grow by 42.6 per cent annually to $3.11 billion (Dh11.4 billion) by 2030. Aramco’s venture capital fund Prosperity7, participated in a $400 million (Dh1.4 billion) investment round for Zhipu AI, a Chinese startup specialising in generative AI. This investment marked the first instance of foreign funding supporting China’s efforts to establish a domestic competitor to American artificial intelligence research organisation OpenAI.
