Qatar and others are warning that the status of the over month-long Gaza ceasefire is precarious, and faces imminent collapse, after Israel mounted large-scale airstrikes on some areas of the Gaza Strip starting Wednesday. There have been several episodes of brief assaults over the past month, but the situation is escalating fast once again. Some attacks have continued into Thursday, killing at least 32 Palestinians since the renewed assaults began. It all started after the Israeli army (IDF) said its troops in Khan Younis were fired upon, allegedly by Hamas or other Palestinian militants. But the IDF confirmed there were no troop casualties as a result. This new flare-up marks by far the deadliest since the Trump-backed ceasefire went into effect. A suicide bombing attack outside a court in Pakistan’s capital Islamabad has killed 12 people and injured at least 27 more, and by all reports the carnage could have been worse as the attacker was unable to get inside a district courthouse, the intended target. What appears to be an act of terrorism in the heart of India’s capital city has left at least eight people dead and over 24 injured. It happened at Delhi’s popular Lajpat Rai Market. “A car explosion in New Delhi’s Red Fort area, popular with tourists to the Indian capital city, has killed several people and injured many more, local media reported,” according to reports of Monday’s blast. “The cause of the explosion is not immediately clear, but it occurred in a parked car outside Gate 1 of the Red Fort metro station.” One eyewitness only identified as a nearby shopkeeper has told local media: “I never heard such a loud explosion ever in my life.” The person described, “I fell three times due to the explosion. The death toll from a past week of spiraling violence in Syria’s Sweida province, a stronghold of the Druze minority – which also has a presence of Christians – has climbed to 940 since last weekend, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, despite a recent declared ceasefire. Among the dead are 326 Druze fighters and 262 Druze civilians, including 182 reportedly executed on the spot by forces from Syria’s Hayat Tahrir al-Sham government fighters. The Observatory also reported the deaths of 312 government security forces and 21 Sunni Bedouins—three of whom were civilians allegedly executed by Druze fighters. At least 13 Pakistani soldiers were killed and 24 others wounded, including 14 civilians, in a suicide bombing on Saturday targeting an army convoy in North Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan, local media reported. On Sunday, a massive suicide bomb attack tore through the important Greek Orthodox church Mar Elias in Damascus, killing 27 and wounding dozens more. The huge attack just added to the spate of sectarian violence across Syria, which undercuts the Islamist Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) government’s claim to be protecting religious minorities. The HTS was quick to blame ISIS for the Mar Elias bombing, and on Monday announced the arrest of a number of ISIS associates who they claimed were involved, vowing to bring them to justice. Now that whole narrative seems in doubt. ISIS never took credit for the Mar Elias bombing, which, since it was the biggest attack in Damascus in a very long time, would be an unusual oversight. Now, another group, Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah (SAAS), issued its own statement claiming credit for the attack.
